I could have sworn that post said the 15th earlier today. Regardless, I committed to my first DESMO ride for Sun the 16th. Saturday the 15th is birthday celebration plans pushed back from last weekend for my buddy Chris.
I get it now. That's why you cracked up. Eric is such a sneak. ;@)
DESMO (Ducati Enthusiast Sport Motorcycle Organization) is an "officially sanctioned" Ducati group for the north east. The "Captain" of the club has been trying to get me involved since late last season. So I succumbed and committed to a ride to see what the deal is. As far as I can tell, the majority of the members are track day whores. Their "official" DESMO rides are hyper anal retentive. For instance, you have to RSVP for a ride. If a slot isn't open, you get put on a waiting list. Route sheets are provided for each rider. There's a pre-ride "talk" before the start to go over the rules. Every ride has a lead and sweeper for each group. The groups are broken down to no more than 5-6 riders and by ability level. A support vehicle usually accompanies the ride. There's predetermined gas and lunch stops planned. I can go on, but I'm sure you get the picture.
They're a very well developed group with lots of vendor support and members who seem to know there shit. Actually, there are a couple of Ducati Techs from the area that roll with them from time to time. Scott from Gold Coast and Tom from Chronic that I've met so far. See the appeal? There's a but in here though. DESMO seems to have a reputation of snobbery (the typical stereotype for Ducati owners). I haven't really experienced that yet but I have experienced a bit of the innuendo crap, which I hate with a passion. Say what you mean and mean what you say is my motto.
My problem with desmo rides is exactly what UF described, on top of being too anal, they're too slow and sociable which I suppose isn't a bad thing if you're into that. As far as snobbery goes, I've heard Desmo folks take it to the next level by trying to be "true" Ducatisti, as in... only the "superbikes" are true ducati and that monsters are an abomination. whatever.
UF, have great time, you'll be missed.
WS, we're gonna have fun, I want to do the catskill loop that we never got to do due to circumstances beyond our control (and her name is Lauren).
alright, you've convinced me. i'll ride. but man, i really want to do these damn cams already! i mean if i were to tell you that you'd get an extra 10-15% in hp (that's what i should get after the cam swap & jetting) you'd be jumping to do it too. just a PITA w/out a garage. i mean i have ~3hrs everyday during the week when i could work on it, but it's a little hard when i have to pull the tank, radiator & carbs b/c i can't really store that shit inside our apt while i'm working on it. so, i'll just hope that saturday's forecast starts to look better.
DESMO seems to epitomize all that sux about some ducati owners. i can understand why most (& even i) would purchase a ducati (for styling mostly), but i can't understand the whole non-monster thing. some ppl are just pricks i guess. still, sounds like a good way to get in good with some techs at least & hopefully that'll translate into cheaper services.
"i mean if i were to tell you that you'd get an extra 10-15% in hp (that's what i should get after the cam swap & jetting) you'd be jumping to do it too"
Come on now, do you really think that 7hp jump would've increased your enjoyment this past weekend? No. Is it gonna increase your enjoyment in the future? Probably not. Why? How many times during a ride do you reach max hp (9k rpm?) during a ride? Once? Twice? If you're answer is more than that then I suggest you forget about the cams and start shopping for a bigger bike! Besides, even if you do gain let's say 10hp, will your chassis/suspension/brakes be able to handle it?
I'm just busting on you homie, you do you. You. Do. You. Just make sure you and your sled are ready to roll by 8am Sunday morn!
actually i was revving it around 7-9K during most of the RT 26 ride, that's why you could hear me. :) a 10% increase in HP is pretty big. do i think i would've needed it on our ride? probably not b/c those were new roads. would it had made my ride a little more fun? most definitely. my suspension is pretty good (i think, can never really tell unless i ride somebody else's bike who's bike is set up for my weight) & don't wanna shell out the $600-800 for a penske that's valved for me. i figure that's $ best put towards a "better" bike. i've been looking, but it's gonna have to wait until i get a new job (somebody hurry up & hire me damn it!). 8AM at Gorilla? any or your ducati cronies gonna be there?
oh i forgot, my ride can handle much more HP than what i've got. ppl race 85hp SVs with stock m/c & upgraded stock forks. if they can race those, then my ride with the upgraded forks, m/c + rear shock can handle the hi 70s.
"As far as snobbery goes, I've heard Desmo folks take it to the next level by trying to be "true" Ducatisti, as in... only the "superbikes" are true ducati and that monsters are an abomination."
I've heard that too. Specifically from one particular DML member. But that's not my experience from the group as a whole or anyone that I've met so far. Could it be true? Possibly. Maybe there's a member or two with a turned up nose to Monsters. Would that deter me from socialising with the group? Not really. Plus, I'd rather make my judgements from actual experience rather than hearsay or rumours. To me, it's a better way to live.
Let me just say this... skdmrks holds a special place in my heart. You've made me feel like part of the family. And I really enjoy the moto experience with all of you. Sincerely. That's something I hold in high regards. DESMO, DML, BaB, BBo or Tina can't change that.
So guys, have a fun and safe ride next weekend and kick the shit out of 'dem twisties. Please be careful with some of those DML guys. There a bit like loose canons and I don't want to hear some drama happening to you guys because one of them did something stupid and careless.
Not at all but just remember... there's U & I, plus 4 DML'ers and that makes 6. The more we have the slower we go, but seeing as how we're not racing and U & I will be riding in the front, what difference will it make anyway?
Just make sure you tell them to show up exactly on time at the meet cause we ain't waiting! The meet's at the 2nd gas station on the Palisades, the one in the middle and it's between exits 4 & 5. Meeting at 9am sharp. Ask'em to be in appropriate gear, and warn them that we'll out be long and late and won't stop for food until the end of the day (Roscoe's biiatch!). Speed limits on the slab or in towns, and every man for himself otherwise.
Oh, I'm not worried about you keepin' it sane, my brother.
I'll prod her again about a ride the next time I see her. She showed interest in a grilled cheese run a while back. But I think she's a little miffed at me for lettin' loose from her group (BaB). I may have to lay some Eyetalian charm to smooth things over. ; )
Hey, you know that's gonna screw up the quota if she gets hooked on skdmrks. She's Polly Purebred white. And Texan to boot. But a rabid liberal. Heh.
you already know i can't go but have fun and be safe ya'll.
i gotta work one of these sundays! especially since i'll be hitting montreal in a few weekends. gotta format a non-slab road before i go though. probably go up through vermont and hit the eastern side of ca. and then through the districts to montreal.... word! i'm excited and shorty is getting her gear compiled for the trip as well. which means, i won't be going hard on any twisties but i'm sure the big beast can handle me, the luggage, and a passenger effectively. GS, best all around bike in the world baby! knawmean? i'm just thankful i'm able to ride one.
"i'm just thankful i'm able to ride one." was that a stab at E, UF & my heights? lol...see how you are."
haaaa! no way dude... i would've just called you cute if i wanted to take a stab at your height... lol
sorry, i couldn't resist, on the real though, it is just cause that beeeeyatch is expensive as sh*t but honestly, from what i've experienced, it is worth it.
still getting a sport bike as my second bike one day though...
thanks re: montreal man. i am excited about the trip. going up to CT. to get shorty some more riding gear tomorrow and i'm trying to plot this route soon...

hmmmm...i was thinking of doing my cams this weekend, but i might be able to be coaxed into riding instead.
Sorry Eric, can't do this Sat.
"Sorry Eric, can't do this Sat."
So then it works out cause we're gonna ride on Sunday!
lol
i think he meant the 16th mike.

What a busy morning. Ugh!
