Maps and gps

so, i've been trying to decide on a gps to get and mount on the killeroopty, still not sure yet...while i was waiting around getting new shoes put on her, i stopped in to barnes and nobles to look at some maps. i picked up three (3) different ones and i suppose i will try to plot the ride on them. since i'm no cartographer, i was wondering what source you use to come up with your rides, el penguin, what maps you use and where you get them from. unless that is part of the secret allure of el penguin, which i completely understand.

as far as gps goes, i figure i will get a used one on ebay, handheld, most likely, to keep it under 2 bills and to make sure it's waterproof and portable, and then rig some sort of 12v cig lite adapter to run it off of, screw battery power.

i don't know if any of you have been thinking along those lines, if so, maybe we can compare notes and share ideas.

jinx,
i've been thinking of just getting a GPS logger/tracker to plot our rides afterwards, not before. you can get those for around $80. you can then upload the route via the software & have it plot the route on google maps/earth. most GPS these days can plot their routes on google though, so that's something to keep in mind. as far as how he plots his rides, good ? i think he uses google maps, but that could be an el penguin trade secret.

I've been wanting to get a gps since last year but the snag I keep running into is that there is no gps system that works with Macs.
True, you can use bootleg software to make it work but if I'm gonna spend the money, I want that shit to be plug and play with no bugs or any other nonsense. If I had a pc, I would already gotten a Garmin Street Pilot.
As for how I plot the route we do... Ahhh ancient filipino secret!!! Let's just say I have a knack for sniffing out the good roads. I also have a keen sense of direction, drop me anywhere and I can find my way. Sorta of like mtn biking, I can sniff out the best trails even if I've never been there before, and I won't get lost.
